Google Sheets AI Function: =AI() vs FITS

Yes, Google Sheets has a native AI function. It is =AI() (also accepted as =Gemini()), and it generates text, summarizes, categorizes, runs sentiment analysis, and pulls real-time answers from Google Search.

It only runs on eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, which is why many people see "AI function not available." This page covers what it does, who has it, its limits, and when the =FITS() formula is the better fit.

Free tier included. Works on accounts that =AI() does not reach.

What the =AI Function in Google Sheets Does

Google documents the function as AI("prompt", [optional range]). The prompt describes what you want; the optional range is the data the prompt should look at. Google's examples include classifying emails as spam or not, categorizing customer inquiries, running sentiment analysis, and asking current-events questions that pull from Google Search.

A typical call, using Google's own example shape:

=AI("Classify the customer inquiry as a compliment, exchange request, or return request.", C2)

You enter the formula, select the cell, and click Generate and Insert. Refreshing is also manual: Refresh and Insert. If your prompt concatenates cells (with &), Google notes that changed data does not prompt a refresh; you decide when to regenerate.

Sheets also has the Ask Gemini side panel for tables, formulas, charts, and analysis, which is a separate feature from the cell-level function. See Google's Gemini in Sheets page.

Who Has the AI Function (and Why It Can Be Missing)

Google's availability table lists the Sheets AI function under these plans (checked against Google's Workspace with Gemini page, 2026-10-26):

  • Workspace: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus
  • Personal Google accounts: Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra
  • Google Workspace Experiments: Google's trusted tester program also carries the feature

If you see AI function not available, Google's help page gives the causes: your plan does not include the function (and you are not in Experiments), your Workspace admin disabled it, or your language setting does not support it. Education, Essentials, and personal free accounts are not on the list.

Even where it is available, usage limits apply: short-term and long-term generation caps, and a 24-hour wait once you hit the long-term limit.

Limits of =AI() Google States Plainly

  • Text only. Responses are limited to text; no charts, no structured objects.
  • No file access. The function cannot read your whole spreadsheet or other Drive files. Context must be passed through the range argument, in the same sheet.
  • Not embeddable. =IF(AI(...)) does not work; AI functions cannot sit inside other functions.
  • 350-cell cap. Selecting more cells generates only the first 350 AI-function results, then you select more manually.
  • One model. It runs Gemini. You cannot point it at another provider's model.
  • Blocked over third-party storage. It does not generate when Sheets is accessed through Box, Dropbox, or Egnyte.

=AI() vs =FITS(): Side by Side

=AI() (Google native)=FITS() (add-on)
SetupNone, but plan-gatedInstall from the Marketplace; free tier starts immediately
Eligible accountsBusiness Standard+ / Google AI plansAny account, including free personal ones
ModelsGemini onlyGemini (free tier), OpenAI and Claude on Premium with your own API keys
Fill downManual generation, 350 cells per selectionFormula fills down; requests queue in the background
Temperature controlNot exposedThird argument, 0 to 1
Web-grounded answersYes, from Google SearchNo, models answer from their training data
CostIncluded in the plan; usage limits apply$60 once, lifetime. Tokens billed by your own provider, no markup
Embedded in formulasNot supportedAsync result lands in the cell; combine with other functions after it resolves

Where =AI() is the better choice: you are already on an eligible Workspace plan, you want zero setup and no API keys, and you need answers grounded in current Google Search results. That last one is a real advantage FITS does not have.

Where FITS is the better choice: the account does not qualify for =AI(), you want model choice (including Claude), you need a column of hundreds of rows processed without clicking Generate per batch, or you want per-row temperature control.

Google Sheets AI Function: FAQ

Does Google Sheets have AI?

Yes. Google Sheets has a native AI function, =AI() (also written =Gemini()), plus the Ask Gemini side panel. The function generates text, summarizes, categorizes data, runs sentiment analysis, and pulls real-time information from Google Search. It needs an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, or a spot in the Workspace Experiments program.

Why does Google Sheets say “AI function not available”?

Google's help page lists three causes: your account is not on a Workspace plan that includes AI functions and you are not in the Workspace Experiments program, your Workspace admin has turned the feature off, or your language setting does not support it. The eligible Workspace plans are Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus. Personal accounts need Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra.

Is the AI function in Google Sheets free?

It is included in the Workspace plans that carry it (Business Standard and up) and in the paid Google AI plans for personal accounts. There is no free tier for the =AI function itself; Google also applies short-term and long-term generation limits, and hitting the long-term limit means waiting 24 hours.

What is the difference between =AI() and =FITS()?

=AI() is Google's own function: no setup, works only on eligible plans, runs Gemini, and refreshes manually. =FITS() is a formula from the FITS add-on: it works on any account including free ones, lets you pick the model (Gemini, OpenAI, or Claude with your own key), fills down a whole column, and runs asynchronously in the background.

Can I use the =AI function on a personal Google account?

Only with a paid Google AI plan. Google's plan table lists the Sheets AI function under Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra for personal accounts. On a free personal account the function returns the not-available error; FITS works there because it calls the model APIs directly.

Can =AI() fill a whole column?

Not by dragging. Google caps generation at the first 350 selected AI-function cells per selection, refreshes are manual (Generate and Insert), and AI functions cannot be embedded inside other functions like IF(). FITS's =FITS() formula fills down like any spreadsheet formula and queues each row's request in the background.
