Claude for Google Sheets
Yes, you can use Claude in Google Sheets. Three ways work today: Anthropic's official Claude for Google Workspace add-on, an MCP connector, or a formula.
This page explains each one, what it costs, and when each is the better choice. FITS is the formula option: it runs Claude models inside cells with your own API key.
Free tier included. Claude models need Premium plus your own Anthropic API key.
The Three Ways to Use Claude With Google Sheets
1. Claude for Google Workspace (the official add-on)
Anthropic ships an official add-on called Claude for Google Workspace, currently in beta. One install adds a Claude sidebar to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
In Sheets it builds financial models, analyzes your data, and pulls live numbers from your data sources. You review every change first: highlighted cells and suggested edits that you accept or dismiss.
Install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, or your Workspace admin deploys it to your domain. Open it with Extensions, then Claude, then Open Claude.
Access is scoped: Claude sees the file you open it in, plus any connectors your organization turns on. Admins control who can install it. See Anthropic's page for details.
2. MCP and connectors (Claude outside the sheet)
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. With an MCP server or a connector, Claude running in its own app reads your Drive files, including Sheets.
This fits teams that already work in Claude and want it to pull spreadsheet data on demand. The MCP docs list remote servers and local servers as the two connection styles.
The difference matters: the conversation lives in Claude, not in your spreadsheet. You cannot fill a column by dragging a formula down.
3. The =FITS() formula (Claude inside cells)
FITS is a Google Sheets add-on that turns AI models into a spreadsheet function. Any model name starting with claude- routes to the Claude API.
You write =FITS("prompt", "claude-sonnet-5-5") in a cell. The cell shows Processing while the request runs, then the answer lands in the cell.
Because it is a formula, it fills down. One prompt per row, drag it down, and Claude works your whole column. That is the job the sidebar and MCP options do not do.
How to Use Claude in Google Sheets With FITS
- Install FITS from the Google Workspace Marketplace. The free tier starts immediately with Gemini models.
- Get an Anthropic API key from the Anthropic Console. Usage is billed by Anthropic at your key's rates.
- Unlock Premium ($60, one time, lifetime) and paste your key into the Claude card in the FITS sidebar.
- Write the formula in a cell. The signature is
=FITS(prompt, model, temperature).
Both formulas reference another cell, so each row gets its own answer. The temperature argument (0 to 1) controls how much freedom Claude takes; use low values for classification.
The cell shows Processing while the request runs. FITS is asynchronous: results land when the API answers, without blocking your sheet.
What Claude in Google Sheets Costs
| Option | Tool cost | Usage cost |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Google Workspace | See Anthropic's plans | Included in the plan |
| MCP / connectors | A Claude plan plus any server you run | Your Claude plan |
| FITS + Claude | $60 once, lifetime. Free tier is Gemini only. | Your own Anthropic API key, billed per token by Anthropic |
FITS never marks up tokens. You pay Anthropic directly, so your cost scales with your own usage, and current per-token rates live on Anthropic's pricing page.
Limits You Should Know Before Choosing
- Workspace add-on: one file at a time, conversations in a sidebar. No fill-down. Beta software; admins gate installation.
- MCP: lives outside the sheet. Great for asking Claude about your data, not for filling columns.
- FITS: async by design, so very large batches take time. Your own API key means your own rate limits apply.
- Model names change. Use current IDs like claude-sonnet-5-5. Old names such as claude-3-sonnet will fail.
Claude and Google Sheets: FAQ
Can Claude edit Google Sheets?
Yes, two ways. Anthropic's Claude for Google Workspace add-on proposes edits you accept or dismiss. FITS writes Claude's answer into the cell that holds the =FITS() formula, like any other formula result.
Can Claude read Google Sheets?
Yes. The Workspace add-on reads the file you open it in, plus any connectors your admin enabled. With FITS, you pass the cell or range into the prompt, for example " & A2:A10 & ", and Claude reads that data.
How do I connect Claude to Google Sheets?
Three options. Install Anthropic's Workspace add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Connect Claude to your data over MCP or a Drive connector. Or install FITS and call Claude models from a formula with your own API key.
Is there a Claude extension for Google Sheets?
Yes. Claude for Google Workspace (beta) is an official add-on for Docs, Sheets, and Slides. FITS is a separate add-on that runs Claude inside spreadsheet formulas instead of a sidebar.
Is Claude in Google Sheets free?
Not with FITS. Claude models are a FITS Premium feature ($60 once, lifetime) and need your own Anthropic API key, so Anthropic bills your usage directly. The FITS free tier runs Gemini models at no cost. Check Anthropic's site for the Workspace add-on's current plans.
Which Claude model should I use in Google Sheets?
Use claude-sonnet-5-5 for most sheet work, claude-opus-5-5 for hard analysis, and claude-haiku-5-5 for fast, high-volume jobs. These are the current model IDs (checked 2026-10-19). Older names like claude-3-sonnet are retired.
